Event Description

3rd annual Calgary International Mountain Film Festival

Mountain Adventure, White Water, Extreme Climbing, and a Canadian Unicycle Legend . . .

The 3rd Annual Calgary International Mountain Film Festival goes April 28, April 29 and May 1 at the Plaza Theatre in Kensington.

The Calgary International Mountain Film Festival offers something for outdoors-oriented people of all ages. Be inspired by two of the world’s most elite outdoor athletes, who will present their tales of adventure, courage, and pushing the limits. Plus, a series of films on cycling, mountain sports and water sports will take you to some of the wildest, most beautiful places in North America and around the world.

Canadian unicyclist Kris Holm is the headline speaker on Thursday, April 28, presenting ‘One Tired Guy: A Story on One Wheel.’ His presentation will be followed by two bicycle-themed films.

Friday, April 29, American climbing superstar and BASE jumper, Dean Potter, will discuss hard first ascents, free solo ascents and speed ascents. His adrenaline-pumping talk will be followed by two alpine climbing films.

Water-themed films will be screened on Sunday afternoon, May 1: from Ecuador’s Amazon Basin, to the Grand Canyon and Colorado’s Crystal River Drainage. The Congo River, and the Lower Bashkaus River in Siberia’s Altai Mountains are also in the spotlight.

Festival ‘best films’ will be screened Sunday evening, May 1, with a focus on rock climbing, bouldering, elite alpine climbing, Nordic snowboarding, and backcountry skiing in the Himalayas.

The Calgary International Mountain Film Festival is presented by Spirit West, a Calgary-based outdoor apparel and accessory shop, and sponsored in part by the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.

Tickets, $12.95 - $16.95, are available at Spirit West, 1210 – 11 Ave. S.W., telephone (403) 263-1381; as well as in person at Mountain Equipment Co-op; online at
